Domaine de Chalamon hides behind cypress hedges on the edge of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The bastide dates from the 18th century and runs to some 1,700 square metres, set in fifteen hectares of olive groves and southern planting.
Its gardens are the reason to come. Thirty years ago the landscape architect Dominique Lafourcade cut six of them here, each with its own character, diverting streams and opening perspectives through the Alpilles light. A heated pool sits between olive and cypress, and there is a tennis court and bicycles.
The house serves salads, sharing plates and wine rather than keeping a restaurant, and can be taken over entirely. Les Baux-de-Provence and the Carrières de Lumières are close.
